Why throw gold paper into the sky?
This is a custom of the Fujian people. “Kouqian” is a long, rectangular paper that is thrown to lone ghosts and wild spirits to make it easy for them to move on. It is also scattered into the sea for water ghosts.
In some traditional customs, people will throw gold paper into the sky on specific days or major festive activities. This behavior is called “fireworks”, “Kongming lanterns” or “firecrackers”, mainly to pray for good luck, safety, health, wealth, and happiness. Throwing gold paper or fireworks is believed to drive away evil spirits and keep bad luck away from oneself and one’s family.
