Daoist masters, like Buddhist monks, are usually required to maintain a life of austerity, including celibacy and refraining from marriage and having children. This is because in both Daoism and Buddhism, the path of cultivation is believed to require a focus on the spiritual world and avoiding distractions from worldly affairs. In addition, many of these practitioners are bound by strict moral and ethical codes outlined in their teachings, which aim to maintain a pure and noble state in order to better contribute to society. However, in some traditions, such as the Yangsheng Dao or Quanzhen Dao, there is more flexibility in their practices and rules regarding celibacy.
