Taoism emphasizes transcending the material world and the concept of power, so its political view presents an attitude of “non-interventionism”, that is, not interfering in politics and letting it take its natural course. In their view, the establishment of political institutions and the correct use of power should be based on natural harmony, humanity principles and cultivation of moral character. Taoism believes that politics should be governed by those with moral character, and it is necessary to establish good moral and ethical concepts, advocate virtues such as benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, pursue harmony in human relations and a society of great unity, and achieve peace and development at the individual, family and social levels. Thus, in this sense, Taoism’s political view is centered around “governance by the way of nature” and “governance by moral character”, advocating guiding people to establish moral integrity, restrain evil and promote good, pursue the harmony between nature and humans, and cultivate the mind and nourish the nature, thus jointly building a harmonious society and achieving a beautiful social vision.
